one of the advantages of living in the age of jade goody is that most people now get their information from television and gossip magazines. so it is pleasing to see in "the times" this morning (see here) that research by the scottish executive has found that when people think of scotland they first think of groundskeeper willie. naturally i'm happy for willie but think fat bastard is a more accurate representation of the scotch people and culture.

i've only just heard about the mars bar phenom. don't know how widespread its use is. didn't take it into account. i just thought what's more scotch than fat bastard? nothing obviously.
I'm amused by the fact that you think an obnoxious fat man with man-boobs is "a more accurate representation" of scots people & culture
well, he's hard not to notice, and he's funny. plus i'm thinking purely in pop cultural terms.
but for me the quintessential scotchman is the crofter (played by john laurie) in hitchcock's "39 steps": mean, hardscrabble, humourless, austere, cold, stingy, abusive, untrustworthy, and probably presbyterian.
ps. scotland hasn't got a lock on manboobs. they're everywhere. unfortunately.

Meh. A scary cross between the two is probably most accurate. Apart from those Scotsmen I've been out, with, obv. They're far more in the Ssssssean Connery mould (without the lisssssp).
